Frequently asked questions

Can I climb if I have no experience?

Absolutely! We take out all levels of climbers from brand new beginners to advanced climbers.

What if the people in my group have different levels of skill?

Definitely not a problem. Joshua Tree National Park is the biggest climbing destination in the US with thousands of routes providing appropriate climbing for people of all skills levels. We know the park very well and even when it’s crowded we’ll find a spot that offers climbs for everyone in your group. Usually we will be able to set up one rope that services multiple climbs of different difficulties, or two ropes side by side, making the process really efficient and fun for everyone!

Will you provide equipment?

Yes. When you book you will be asked for your shoe, waist and helmet size and your guide will bring clean, sanitized and gently used equipment for you to use for the duration of your course.

Is there an age limit?

We take out children as young as 4 years old. There is no upper age limit; if you’re psyched to go adventure outside, we’re psyched to take you.

Do I need an entrance pass for Joshua Tree National Park?

Yes. You will follow your guide into the park in your own car, and will need to have a valid park pass for the day of your climb (one pass covers everyone in your car). This can be purchased either at the Visitor Center or at the entrance gate for $30 as of this writing. You can check the current cost of park passes as well as the available options here. Consider showing up 15 minutes before our meeting time to go in and get a pass and use the restrooms. This will save us time getting into the park.

Where do I meet my guide?

The day before your climb you will receive an email confirming the meeting location with your guide. In most cases we will meet you in the parking lot of the Joshua Tree National Park Visitors Center at the West Entrance (click here for a map of the exact location).

How long are the climbing courses?

We offer 1/2 day courses that are 4 hours, or full day courses that run for 8 hours.

What should I bring?

For half day programs a liter of water and a maybe a snack bar should suffice. For full days we recommend bringing a lunch and enough water for an active day in the desert (at least 1-2 liters). Check out our Local Info page for some options to pick up a lunch in the morning before we go out. Aside from that you may want to bring some personal items like sunblock, medications, and your phone to capture some awesome footage!

What should I wear?

We recommend dressing in layers. Desert weather can be variable depending on if you are in the sun or the shade, so be prepared for a temperature swing. Other than that, just comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Our cancelation policy can be found here.

How much does it cost?

Check out the rates for all of our programs here.

Should I tip my guide?

Tipping your guide is never expected, but certainly appreciated. If your guide has provided you with an exceptional experience it is standard practice to tip anywhere from $20 - $100. Thank you for supporting the Mojave Guides team, we will work hard to provide you the highest value and most fun experience!
