FAQ

All necessary equipment is provided free of additional charge.
Our guide to participant ratio is 1:4, so if you have more than 4 participants in your party you will have multiple guides, which means even more climbing!
Rock Climbing is offered in half day (4 hours) and full day (8 hours) formats. If you wear out early or decide that climbing isn’t for you, we can switch it up with a tour of one of the park’s unique corridors, a nice hike, or some technical skill building (like how to make a climbing anchor, etc.) on the ground. In fact, consider the Full Day option if you have the time, it’s a better deal than the half day!
What to expect at the park
You will need to follow your guide into Joshua Tree National Park in your own vehicle, probably a half hour or less to most climbing spots
Some programs will choose to stay in one spot to maximize the number of climbs you do and others will choose to move around and see more areas. It’s totally up to you and we can play it by ear because it’s just us!
After the climbing adventure
Our days end out in the park. Keep this in mind when you’re planning. You might want to drive around and see some sights or to watch the sunset and unwind after your climbs.

Absolutely. Joshua Tree is one of the most beginner-friendly rock climbing destinations in the country, and Mojave Guides' programs are designed specifically to meet you where you are. Our AMGA-certified guides cover all the fundamentals — technique, communication, and safety — before you ever leave the ground. All equipment is provided, no prior experience is necessary, and because every trip is fully private, your guide tailors the entire day to your skill level and comfort. Whether you're 8 or 80, first-timers consistently leave with the confidence (and stoke) to climb again.

We recommend wearing comfortable, close-fitting athletic clothing that allows a full range of motion — think athletic pants or shorts and a moisture-wicking top. Avoid loose or baggy clothing that can snag on rock. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are fine for your approach; we provide climbing shoes as part of your gear package. You'll also want to bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water (at least 2–3 liters per person for a full day). A light snack or lunch is a good idea too — grab-and-go options are available at the Roadrunner Café near our meeting point.

Yes, the difficulty is entirely in your hands. Joshua Tree has over 8,000 climbing routes ranging from easy, confidence-building slabs to challenging crack systems and faces. Your Mojave Guides climbing guide will assess your ability and goals at the start of the day and route-select accordingly. If you're progressing quickly, we push you further. If you want to stay in the comfort zone and rack up as many climbs as possible, we do that too. The goal is always that you finish the day feeling accomplished, not defeated.
